Old Westbury Gardens, Westbury
Picnic in class at the former estate of John Shaffer Phipps. There’s a designated picnic area on the gorgeous estate, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Beauty is everywhere with 200 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes where some wildlife loves to wander. An impromptu picnic is also possible as its Cafe in the Woods serves sandwiches, salads and beverages. Indian Island County Park, Riverhead

Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, Oyster Bay
This stunning state park (also on the National Register) is over 400 acres with gardens, fountains and the Tudor revival mansion known as Coe Hall Historic House Museum. Bring a chair or blanket to enjoy an outdoor picnic in the designated area where relaxation is a guarantee. It’s open daily from 9am-5pm until November 18. Go
Sunken Meadow State Park, Kings Park
This state park has long been a popular spot for gatherings with millions of people heading over each year. That’s thanks in part to its gorgeous views of the Long Island Sound and Connecticut, an almost mile-long boardwalk and, of course, a lovely picnic area. Belmont Lake State Park, West Babylon
Located in North Babylon, Belmont Lake State Park is another place where Long Islanders tend to go for picnics. It’s probably due to the fact that there are plenty of picnic tables to choose from, charcoal grills to get some hot dogs cooking and even picnic pavilions to rent. The 1,600-acre state park is another that drips in history—it was the 19th century property of J. Neal Plum and George C. Taylor. It’s full of chances for outdoor activity with open fields for sports and four miles of trails.
